Afterwards, he spent several years as solo oboist in the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1974 he was awarded a prize at the Prague Spring International Music Competition, and in 1976 he won the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. Since then, he has appeared as a soloist all over the world. Leading composers as Manfred Trojahn, Wolfgang Rihm and Akira Nishimura have written oboe concertos for Thomas.
